For Creatives Exploring Decentralized Web Technologies

The Filecoin Fund for Cultural Preservation supports projects that use decentralized storage technologies to archive, preserve, and disseminate cultural works. The web is an amazing engine for creative productivity –– putting the tools to create in the hands of billions. Yet, digital artifacts are fragile, and without dedicated efforts to preserve them, they risk being lost forever. Through projects that explore decentralized storage and web technologies, this Match Fund supports digital archiving efforts, emphasizing the critical role of decentralized storage technologies for safeguarding human creativity. We are particularly interested in projects that redefine digital librarianship, support data sovereignty for creators, and preserve a diverse array of artistic and culturally significant works.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for this Match Fund, projects must exhibit a strong commitment to the preservation and accessibility of cultural works, using decentralized storage technologies, like IPFS and Filecoin, as a foundational tool.

  • Align with FFDW’s mission. Projects must align with FFDW’s mission to preserve humanity’s most important information.

  • Decentralized Storage Technology. Projects must use or provide for the use of Filecoin, focusing on the archival, dissemination, or universal access of cultural works.

  • Archiving and Preservation Focus: Projects must incorporate digital preservation. This could involve advanced metadata management systems; creative applications of Filecoin's smart contract capabilities; broaden the robustness of data storage through more diverse storage destinations (providing storage on different media, at multiple institutions, greater geographical diversity, or with links to other storage systems); or collaborations that significantly improve data accessibility and usability.

By submitting projects to this Match Fund, creators may be asked by Artizen or FFDW to share their experiences with decentralized technologies, including insights into the impact and importance of decentralized digital preservation.

The following creators and projects are not eligible for this Match Fund: current and former members of the Filecoin core development team; current and former officers, directors, or advisors of Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web, Filecoin Foundation, and/or Protocol Labs; current and former (within the past four years) staff of Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web, Filecoin Foundation, and/or Protocol Labs; submissions or submitters that do not comply with the Filecoin Community Code of Conduct; and where prohibited by law.
